Advocate Navkiran Singh is an experienced advocate with a career spanning over three decades. He was called to the bar in November 1986 and is enrolled with the Punjab & Haryana Bar Council under enrollment number P-786/1986. Advocated Singh is proficient in English, Punjabi, and Hindi languages.
He is affiliated with prestigious legal associations, including the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association in Chandigarh and the Supreme Court of India Bar Association in New Delhi. Navkiran Singh serves as the General Secretary of Lawyers for Human Rights International.
Throughout his legal career, Navkiran Singh has practiced in various courts and commissions, including the Supreme Court of India in New Delhi, Punjab & Haryana High Court in Chandigarh, National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi, Punjab State Human Rights Commission, and NRI Commission of Punjab.
His notable legal experience includes being appointed as a special counsel for the “Peoples Commission” constituted by the “Committee for Disappearances in Punjab.” In this role, he represented cases related to human rights violations in Punjab from 1984 to 1994, working alongside retired judges of the Supreme Court of India and High Court.
Advocate Singh has also gained international law experience. He registered as a “Foreign Legal Consultant” with the Law Society of British Columbia and worked with Kang Abrahams Chahal, Barristers and Solicitors in Vancouver, Canada, from September 2001 to March 2002. During this period, he was part of the defense team in the AIR INDIA CRASH trial.
In his extensive court appearances, Navkiran Singh has represented victims in approximately 2000 cases, including detenus detained under the provisions of the National Security Act and Terrorist & Disruptive Activities Prevention Act in India. He has also handled matters such as Habeas Corpus Petitions, custodial violence, illegal detentions, extra-judicial executions, and filed petitions seeking compensation for victims of state repression.
Navkiran Singh specializes in family laws, marriage law, adoption acts, criminal appeals under the Indian Penal Code and local or special acts. He has also filed several public interest petitions pro bono in matters concerning human rights violations, environmental pollution, and ecological imbalance. Additionally, he deals with passport matters, including appeals before the Appellate Authority and writs in the High Court.
Navkiran Singh has been recognized as an expert witness in courts abroad. He has appeared and accepted as an expert witness on Indian laws, human rights, and the situation in Punjab in extradition hearings, immigration and refugee boards, and special courts in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
In 2017 and 2019, Navkiran Singh submitted expert reports in asylum cases before the First Tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) in the United Kingdom.
