Today, we are honored to share an exciting update regarding the Guru Nanak Dev Global University with Jathedar Gaini Harpreet Singh Ji, the Akal Takht Chief, the highest clergy position of Sikh Religion, to provide him with an update on our university’s progress and seek his blessings. It was a truly humbling experience to have the opportunity to meet again with such a respected and revered spiritual leader.
Giani Harpreet Singh Ji has an illustrious educational background, having pursued a three-year Diploma Course in Prachaark from Guru Kashi Gurmat Institute, Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo. He furthered his education by obtaining a one-year Diploma in Divinity from Punjabi University, Patiala, followed by a Master’s degree in comparative religious studies from the same institution. Giani Harpreet Singh’s quest for knowledge led him to complete his Ph.D. on the comparative study of the teachings of the Quran and Guru Granth Sahib from Punjabi University as well.
Born to a Granthi father, he developed a deep inclination towards spirituality and Sikhism from a young age. At the age of 24, Giani Harpreet Singh began serving as a pracharak (preacher) under the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), where he dedicated two years to spreading the teachings of Sikhism.
From August 1998 to May 2017, Giani Harpreet Singh served as the Head Granthi at Sri Darbar Sahib Ji, Sri Muktsar Sahib Ji and as a Katha Vachak (Interpreter of religious texts). In May 2017, he was elevated to the esteemed position of Jathedar of Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib Ji. His commitment and dedication to his spiritual duties led to his appointment as the Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar, by the SGPC after the resignation of Giani Gurbachan Singh.
During our meeting with Giani Harpreet Singh Ji, we shared updates on the progress of Guru Nanak Dev Global University and sought his guidance and blessings for our upcoming events. We extended a heartfelt invitation to him for the World Punjabi Conference 2024 in Dallas and the groundbreaking ceremony of Guru Nanak Dev Global University. We believe that his presence and support will further inspire our mission of promoting Punjabi language and culture while fostering collaboration among the Punjabi diaspora.
Giani Harpreet Singh’s contribution to Sikhism and his understanding of various religions make him an exceptional leader. His humility and commitment to serving the Sikh community are commendable. We are grateful for his time and guidance during our meeting, and we look forward to his continued support as we strive to create a world-class institution that upholds the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
