Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor AVSM, VSM (Retired)


Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor AVSM, VSM (Retired) is a distinguished leader and accomplished professional with a remarkable career spanning over 42 years. During his tenure in the Indian Army, he held several high-ranking positions and made significant contributions to various domains.

As the Director General Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor strategically led the landscape of maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) and technology management for the complete range of equipment of the Indian Army. Prior to this, he served as the Director General Information Systems, where he played a pivotal role in steering the information systems management, digital technology transformation, and net centricity of the million-strong Indian Army.

Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor also has extensive experience in international peacekeeping missions. He served as the Senior Logistics Officer in the UN Mission in Angola (1995) and held the position of Deputy Chief Integrated Support Services in the UN Mission in Sudan (2008). He was also posted to the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan, contributing to the training and development of military personnel.

Following his retirement from the Army, Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor served as the Director General of Amity University, where he established the Amity Institute of Defence Technology and formulated Ph.D. and M.Tech programs in Defence Technology. He is currently a Board Member of the Technology Innovation Hub Governing Body at IIT Tirupati and holds the position of Professor of Practice at IIT Tirupati and Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal.

Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor’s expertise and leadership extend beyond academia. He has been nominated as the Vice President and Chairman of the National Advisory Committee of Asset Management Society India. He is a qualified Master Class Independent Director and a member of the Institute of Directors and the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.

Throughout his career, Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor has been recognized for his outstanding contributions and achievements. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2020 for distinguished service as DGIS and the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2004 for his exceptional contributions during Operation Parakram.

As a thought leader, Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor has demonstrated his ability to deliver innovative and effective technical and engineering products and services. He has conceptualized and implemented groundbreaking initiatives such as the Life Cycle Sustenance Support Philosophy and Practices for the Digital Era and the Lab to Market (Field Army) Strategy for innovative products in the Army. His contributions have been recognized with the Eminent Engineer Award 2020 by the Institution of Engineers, India.

Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor is a highly educated professional, holding degrees from prestigious institutions. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the National Defence College, New Delhi. He has achieved Gold Medals in B.Tech (Electronics) and Master of Engineering (Mechanical) and holds an M.Phil in Strategic Management of Technology. He has also been awarded a Ph.D. for his thesis on Defence Industrial Base as a Key Determinant of Capability Building and Capacity Development of India.

In addition to his vast knowledge and experience, Lt Gen Dr Anil Kapoor is an accomplished writer and an avid international speaker. He has delivered keynote addresses and presentations at renowned institutions and conferences worldwide, covering topics such as Global MRO Mosaic of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Industrial Automation to Industrial Autonomy, NextGen Asset Management & MRO, and Technology Sovereignty, among others. He actively contributes to the development of start-ups and entrepreneurs, fostering a culture of innovation, technology, and business growth.
