Guru Nanak Dev Global University is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Harmesh Kumar to its esteemed Advisory Board. Dr. Kumar is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with an exceptional career spanning 38 years, during which he has made significant contributions to the field of mental health and community development.
Dr. Kumar brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the Advisory Board. As a Mental Health Primary Clinician on contract with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he has played a vital role in providing mental health services within the correctional system. His private consulting practice has also allowed him to assist numerous organizations in maintaining healthy relationships, promoting team building, and preventing emotional, legal, and systemic issues.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kumar has demonstrated a deep commitment to community service. He has held several community leadership roles, including serving as an Executive Committee Member of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County, where he contributed to fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding. He has also been actively involved in organizations such as the Ik Onkar Peace Foundation and the Monument Community Partnership (MCP).
Dr. Kumar’s outstanding contributions to mental health and community development have earned him numerous honors and recognitions. He was presented with the HIND RATTAN (Jewel of India) AWARD in 1996 for his achievements and contributions to the well-being of the Indo-American community and the mainstream society in the United States. In 2002, he received a Certificate of Recognition from the Senate of the State of California for his services to the welfare of its citizens. The Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County honored him with the “Making a Difference Award” in 2014, acknowledging his exceptional service to Contra Costa County residents.
With his diverse background and holistic approach, Dr. Kumar is dedicated to investing in prevention and supportive housing for people with disabilities and parolees. He believes in fostering collaborative working relationships between healthcare and custody professionals, promoting a healthy and supportive work environment, and reducing burnout and turnover. His philosophy is rooted in the bio-psycho-social and spiritual model, which enables individuals to find real meaning in their work and cultivate mutually respectful relationships.
